A perforated screen wraps the western elevation, cutting afternoon heat without closing the house off from its garden.
The site's best outlook and its worst sun arrive from the same direction. A deep perforated screen set forward of the glazing resolves both: the view survives, the glare does not, and the gap between the screen and the wall becomes a shaded service edge.
Design intent
The idea the project is built on.
Shading is treated as architecture rather than as an attachment. The screen sets the proportion of the elevation and the rhythm of everything behind it.
Spatial planning
How the plan is arranged.
Entry, kitchen and principal bedroom placement were resolved against the directional framework agreed at the Vastu stage and then held through design development.
Interior
Inside the building.
The screen throws a moving pattern across the internal floors through the afternoon, which set the decision to keep those floors pale and unfigured.
Materials
What it is made of.
- Perforated GI screen
- Western shading frame
- Fair-faced concrete
- Slab edges and soffits
- Terrazzo
- Ground floor
- Powder-coated aluminium
- Glazing system
Construction
The screen is a separate frame tied back to the slab edges, so it could be set out and installed independently of the main envelope.
Outcome
A west-facing house that stays usable through the hottest part of the day.
