A family home planned inward around a central court, so that every principal room borrows light and air from the same open middle.

The plot is deep and narrow, hemmed in on both long sides. Rather than push the house to one edge, the plan opens a court at its centre and arranges the living spaces around it. Circulation runs along the court, which means the corridor is daylit for its full length and the rooms on either side face a quiet, private outlook rather than a boundary wall.

Every deep plot in the neighbourhood resolves the same problem differently. Here the answer was to give the house a middle — a court that the plan can turn towards, so the deepest rooms are no longer the darkest.

Spatial planning

How the plan is arranged.

Public rooms occupy the ground level around three sides of the court, with the fourth left open to the garden. Bedrooms sit above, set back on the court side to keep sightlines between levels indirect.

Interior

Inside the building.

Interiors are kept quiet so the court remains the event. Timber is used at the points the hand meets the building — doors, rails, joinery — and the wall surfaces stay plain.
